Millbrook’s Purple Mash spellings

How does this scheme work?

Every week, the children are given a list of words using the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method. Alongside this, on Purple Mash, the children are set the corresponding 2Do activity. We understand not all children learn in the same way, so the idea is for children to learn spellings using their preferred choice of method, whether this is the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method or the use of the Purple Mash online quizzes. The quizzes provide children with a fun way to learn their spellings each week whilst the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check methods can be adapted to suit the preferred learning style of the child. Children are tested on the words for the week in their weekly spelling dictations.

Suggestions

  • Use the Look, Say, Cover Write, Check sheet to identify the target words for the week.
  • Understand the meaning of the words. For unknown words use a dictionary and add the word to vocabulary books with the definition. Knowing the meaning of words will help build vocabulary and the ability to apply it in writing.
  • Choose a method of your choice when learning to spell. You could sing your spellings, rap, create a spelling scribble, or use rainbow colours. The choice is yours; just make it work for you.
