Physical Education

“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”  John F. Kennedy

INTENT

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sports and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

At Millbrook, we strive to encourage children of all abilities, backgrounds and dispositions to be physically active through sports they play and learn and in and out of the classroom.

Children are being given more and more opportunities to learn new skills, play different sports and represent Millbrook in many competitions and sports festivals. They also have the opportunity of swimming lessons on-site with a qualified swimming coach.

All of these opportunities will enable children to stay healthy, discover new talents and have fun. It has been proven that learning through physical activity can have a positive effect on memory and concentration therefore we are encouraging physical activity across the curriculum.

IMPLEMENTATION

The PE Curriculum is organised and sequenced so that children’s knowledge and skills are developed progressively both through units of lessons as well as year on year. Pupils participate in a minimum of two, one hourly high quality PE lessons a week.  One hour of the timetabled PE is supported by a sports coach, thus providing opportunities for staff CPD as well as access to expert coaching for every pupil.  Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance, and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which aims to encourage not only physical development but also well-being.  Our PE curriculum ensures that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • ensure that pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • engage in competitive sports and activities

  • lead healthy and active lives both in and outside of school

IMPACT

At Millbrook,  the PE curriculum will motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. Our children will obtain the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will grow up to live happy active and healthy lives incorporating the life skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
