Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of the world and their place within it. Through a progressive curriculum, pupils explore physical and human geography, environmental processes, and global interconnections. The curriculum fosters aspiration by encouraging curiosity and ambition in learning about diverse places and cultures. Pupils develop integrity through responsible enquiry and reflection, and show pride in their growing geographical knowledge and skills. We ensure equality and equity by providing inclusive opportunities for all learners to succeed.
Geography is taught through a structured, enquiry-led approach that builds knowledge and skills over time. Pupils begin by exploring local environments and basic map skills in Year 1’s Our Wonderful World, progressing to global comparisons such as England and Somalia in Year 2’s Let’s Explore the World. By Year 6, pupils investigate complex issues like climate change and global trade in Our Changing World. Fieldwork is embedded throughout, from simple observations in KS1 to hypothesis-driven investigations in KS2, promoting resilience and critical thinking. Pupils use atlases, digital mapping, and data analysis to interpret geographical information, developing success through hands-on learning and purposeful enquiry.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils confidently apply geographical vocabulary, interpret maps and data, and explain physical and human processes. They demonstrate resilience in tackling challenging concepts such as tectonic activity (Rocks, Relics and Rumbles) and polar ecosystems (Frozen Kingdoms). Pupils articulate their understanding of settlement patterns, climate zones, and sustainability, showing integrity in their reflections and pride in their achievements. The curriculum equips them with the knowledge and values to become informed, responsible citizens who aspire to make a positive impact on the world.
