At Millbrook Combined School, we believe every child should have the opportunity to become happy, fluent, and assertive readers, thus opening a world of endless learning possibilities and academic success. We understand that if children have a positive start with early reading and phonics it will have endless benefits across all areas of learning. Therefore, phonics is taught through high quality and structured programme of engaging daily lessons to use and apply oral blending and segmenting. This takes the form of differentiated groups according to developmental needs and whole-class teaching. This includes catering for visual, aural and kinaesthetic learners. Each session gives an opportunity for children to revisit their previous learning, be taught new skills, practise together and apply what they have learned. Furthermore, all phonics lessons include a wide range of opportunities for children to develop their communication skills and extend their vocabulary. In order to meet the recommendations in Letter and Sounds, we use resources and tools from Lesley Clarke Synthetic Phonics, Phonics Play and Phonics Tracker. Lessons are planned using a synthetic approach to teach ‘pure sounds’ and the skills of segmenting and blending. Most importantly, lessons are planned according to the children’s need to help develop their love of reading and writing.
